Burnsong Competition for Under 25s

Posted 18/01/2011 By admin

I’ve just been forwarded this opportunity for Scottish songwriters who are 25 years old or younger. Here’s the press release, take this opportunity while you can…

Burnsong, in partnership with Mattie Foulds’ Mobile With A Home (producer/drummer for the acclaimed collective, The Burns Unit) today offers a brand new opportunity for young up and coming Scottish songwriters to record their first demo, working with industry professionals in this fantastic new recording studio.

The Burns Unit’s debut album, Side Show, garnered glowing reviews upon its release in August 2010, with live performances taking Cambridge Folk Festival by storm, and has subsequently been nominated as one of  the albums of 2010 by a number of sources including Ian Rankin, Vic Galloway and Spiral Earth.

Produced by Mattie Foulds, the album grew out of a songwriting retreat devised by Burnsong, an organisation whose aim is to  nurture and promote songwriting in Scotland. On the first date of The Burns Unit’s 2011 tour, Sunday 16th January, at their Celtic Connections gig in the Old Fruitmarket, Mattie will announce the opening of this great opportunity to follow in the band’s footsteps.

“I’m delighted to be supporting three young Scottish songwriters in taking their first steps into the music industry by recording a high quality demo in my new recording studio, Mobile With  A Home”.

The anonymous competition entries will be judged by fellow Burns Unit members, Karine Polwart, Emma Pollock (Delgados), Michael Johnston and Kim Edgar, and a panel of music industry experts including Scottish songwriter and lecturer David Scott (Pearlfishers, BMX Bandits) and music industry consultant Ronnie Gurr. With funding support from Creative Scotland, the winning songwriters will then work in collaboration with Mattie Foulds to plan, record, mix and master their  first professional recordings, which will help them to progress in their music careers.

To enter the competition, which opens on Burns Night, 25th January 2011, young people aged 25 and below should go to www.burnsong.org where they can follow instructions to upload up to three entry songs, of any genre, for consideration by the panel of judges.

The competition will close on 28th February 2011 and winners will be announced via the Burnsong website in March.

For more information, or to set up an interview, please contact Mattie Foulds onmattiefoulds@mac.com , or  visit: www.burnsong.org  www.theburnsunitband.com

Ben Young, one of Edinburgh’s best singer-songwriters till he moved out of Edinburgh, has a 24-day songwriting project coming up: 24 songs on a solstice theme, to be written and published on youtube and also at The Atheist Advent : Solstice Songs on a Godless Guitar. I will certainly be keeping an eye on that. If you’re not familiar with Ben’s music, i suggest you check him out, and if you are familiar with his music, you’ll need no prompting.

While we’re at it, let me just mention OOTB number 373 which will be taking place on Thursday 17th December in the Tron Cellar Bar. It’s our long anticipated XMAS XTRAVAGANZA we will be letting our hair down and partying it up. Covers are allowed, even if they’re christmas ones, and we can’t stop you from coming along in fancy dress! Make a note in your diary and dust off your glad rags, it’ll be a stoater.

If you are a musician and you want to help Josh by playing with his superband when they come to Edinburgh, which will be filmed for the new T mobile advert, READ ON!

This is the only scottish tour date.

You have to bring and play an instrument, whether that is a triangle, your voice or a trombone, come along and meet at the Ross Band Stand (in Princes Street Gardens) in Edinburgh on Wednesday the 25th of November 2009 between 11am and 3pm

There will be a short warm up jam, then everyone will join in the tour song, which we have a track, sheet music, tabs, lyrics for and it’s all availible online for you to look at (see below).

Don’t worry if you are not a master at your instrument, bring it anyway, play when you can and have fun! This will be filmed along with the other british dates for the new T mobile advert which will be on the tv around Christmas time.

We are really interested in brassbands, choirs, orchestras as well as indivudual musicians. PLEASE INVITE AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW SO WE CAN GET AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN TO COME ALONG. if you have any questions, just ask and hopefully we will see you all on the 25th.

Thanks.

PLEASE NOTE – OOTB is not affiliated with Josh or T-Mobile, however we do like to make you aware of opportunities for local musicians.

I am looking for bass/drums/guitar/keyboards, perhaps additional wind/string instruments. Both young bucks and old hands welcome. Backing vocals a bonus. This is a ‘for fun’ project to develop new and existing material to play live and to demo for publishers. Please email sound files or links to your playing samples. Here’s what I do: www.soundcloud.com/iansclater

reindeer with guitarOut of the Bedroom is having a Christmas and New Year break. Thanks to everyone who has played, come along to listen and otherwise supported the evenings at Woodland Creatures this year. I hope you agree that it’s been a very positive move for OOTB and we have an excellent venue for music, drink, food, ambience and everything you would hope for in a top public house.

We’re back at the venue on Thursday 11th January 2018 with the wonderful Roelle Blue as feature act. See you there and we hope you have a very enjoyable festive season!

Audigy at OOTB in March 2010

The remarkable Joe Roberts filmed this at OOTB this March. It’s Audigy, who are great. Enjoy!

Ever read one of the Out of the Bedroom reviews and thought, “I could do a better job?” Want to get more closely involved with Out of the Bedroom and provide a very unique service in the Edinburgh acoustic scene? Then join our review team!

Out of the Bedroom is the only open mic in town that strives to offer each performer an honest, unflinching, respectful review of their gig*. We rely on a team of volunteers, on a rota basis, to provide said reviews. There is an ebb and flow in the number of people who provide this service, and at the minute we’re looking for more folk to take it on!

If you’re interested, keep the following in mind before you sign up:
You need to be there for 8pm sharp on the night.
You must be able to have the review typed and emailed to us by the following Sunday night.
Ideally you will only be called upon every five or six weeks or so, depending on how many folks we have on the rota.

If you haven’t stumbled over those points, then please contact us at reviews@outofthebedroom.co.uk or talk to an OOTB committee member on Tuesday night. We need new blood to provide fresh ink. The more writers we have, the more interesting the reviews will be from week to week!

* Although we don’t always have a review. Stuff happens.

HEY EVERYBODY! OUT OF THE BEDROOM IS TAKING A WEEK OFF FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, AND THEN WE’RE BACK AT THE MONTAGUE BAR, BUT ON SATURDAYS!

AS OF SATURDAY 7 JANUARY 2012 OUT OF THE BEDROOM WILL BE ON EVERY SATURDAY AT 8pm (7:30pm is pretty much the latest sign up time for performers booking one of the open slots).

A few things…

Posted 23/09/2010 By admin

It was nice to see some OOTB faces smiling happily at us at the Neoviolet/Caro Bridges/Cal Roberts/Hannah O’Reilly/Dan Gillan gig on Monday, thanks for coming along to that.

In the meantime, we’re actively sorting out a new home for OOTB, but if your open mic appetite is unsated in the meantime, why not try this out, just got this update from Banshee Labyrinth: “The wailing Banshee Open mic night has now been moved to TUESDAY nights. (FREE entry!) If you are looking for an evening with a little bit of culture this evening is for you. We are looking for singer, song writers, poets, anyone with some musical/artistic ability who would like some stage time. Just sign-up on the night. “

And here’s this week’s gig of the week, if you like, it’s Jump Press A/The Liberty Bells/The Last Knights/The Voltaires/Pray For Ryan at the Wee Red Bar on Saturday 25 September, and it’s £5/4 to get in. Don’t miss it!

There’s more stuff happening next week, but i’ll tell you about that in next week’s email. Take care till then!
