Out of the Bedroom 687 will take place in Woodland Creatures on Thursday, 7th March from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Entry is free and sign up for an open mic slot is from 7.30 p.m., with 10 to 15 minutes per act depending on the number of performers.

Ailsa McEwanFeature act this week is Ailsa and the Seahorses. Ailsa and the Seahorses is the musical project of Scottish singer/songwriter Ailsa McEwan. Emerging onto the Edinburgh music scene in 2016, she mesmerised audiences with her unique vocal, both husky and ethereal. With her own distinctive dreamy style and original songs characterised by rolling guitar chords and catchy vocal melodies, she tells tales of her young adult life.

Callum MackinnonFeature act this week is Callum Mackinnon. Callum is a Leith-based solo artist playing his take on Americana/country/folk. His heartfelt songs take their cues from Cash, Waits and Cave as well as more modern influences like Chris Stapleton and Colter Wall, all with his own alternative twist. Callum will be playing songs from his 2018 release, “Under the Winter Sun”, as well as new tracks from his follow up, currently being recorded, due for release… sometime in the future…

John PorroFeature act this week is expert storyteller John Porro. In John’s words: “I write songs accompanying myself singing on the acoustic guitar. The songs are about experiences and journeys which I like to explore in the lyrics. Some influences would be; Dylan, Cohen, Springsteen, Neil Young and Nick Drake. I’m also inspired by the poetry of William Blake, Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath.”

Original music only for the open slots and all music lovers are welcome.

Kathy MuirFeature act this week is soulful balladeer Kathy Muir. Kathy conjures enlightened songs that paint vivid landscapes of her journey as she transforms elements of pop and folk into brand-new sounds. Her warm voice glides through lyrics that unfold like the words of an inviting diary. They are joined by ethereal guitar melodies and rhythms of an orchestra of other instruments that help tell the story of her well-traveled life.

Kathy spent most of 2018 working on eight songs to complete the ‘Double Take Series’. She is is looking forward to becoming a growing part of the Scottish music community after living six years in the States and recording all her material in Connecticut.

Out of the Bedroom 683 will take place in Woodland Creatures this Thursday, 10th January from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Entry is free and sign up for an open mic slot is from 7.30 p.m., with 10 to 15 minutes per act depending on the number of performers.

It’s the first show of 2019 and we’re making it open slots only, so there is no feature act. This will hopefully allow as many people to play and wish the assembled throng a ‘Happy New Year’ through the medium of song!

Majk StokesIt’s our Christmas night so covers of a festive nature are allowed. Original music is, as usual, encouraged and welcomed.

Feature act this week is the highly entertaining Majk Stokes. Majk (pronounced as “Mike”) a comedy singer-songwriter, poet, environmentalist, Quaker, and self-confessed caffeine addict. His subject matter takes in everything from deep ecology and archaeology to science fiction and superheroes, and his style is perhaps best described as a blend of Tom Lehrer, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg and Bill Bailey – but without so many B’s. He acquired an unorthodox spelling of his name when he was working on a music and drama project with children and young people in Bosnia. His album “Too Much Caffeine” is available now online or in old-fashioned physical form, and his new book of poems, “Potatoes and Broken Hearts”, will be available very soon.

Out of the Bedroom 681 will take place in Woodland Creatures this Thursday, 29th November from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Entry is free and sign up for an open mic slot is from 7.30 p.m., with 10 to 15 minutes per act depending on the number of performers. Original music only for the open slots and all music lovers are welcome.

Caro BridgesFeature act this week is the very fine Caro Bridges. Caro draws on indie, jazz and folk influences to create original and relatable songs. An able guitarist and singer, she is often accompanied by her band The River, an organic gathering of friends old and new who provide harmonically and rhythmically interesting layers of sound in acoustic or electric format.

Caro Bridges released her debut solo EP Words & Tunes in 2009 with three further band releases ‘100 Years From Now’ and ‘From The River To The Sea’ in 2013 and 2015 respectively, and ‘Be Terrible’ in 2017. The band have performed as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in and around venues in Edinburgh and across Scotland, supporting touring artists such as Marika Hackman, This Is The Kit, and Frances.

Original music only for the open slots and all music lovers are welcome.

MetecandriuFeature act this week is Metecandriu. Metecandriu is a singer songwriter based in Edinburgh. Although having invested most of her time in other creative projects such as an animation career and getting by, she has always used music as a form of expression and story telling on a personal level. Always keen to collaborate when the opportunities have arisen and with the hopes in the future to have the time and means to make an album with all the songs written along the way and the musicians she has played with through the years. Her songs have been inspired by the people and the landscape from places where she has lived like Spain, France, Germany, and in Scotland places like Ullapool, North Uist and Benbecula, Dundee and Edinburgh.

17th birthdayOut of the Bedroom 679 is on Thursday 1st November and it is going to be a bit special, as it will be 17 years since OOTB started. There will be cake and there will be great music as usual. I hope you can join in – all are welcome, including those hundreds of musicians who have played over the years but maybe not for some time. 

Leith’s Woodland Creatures is, as usual, hosting from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Entry is free and sign up for an open mic slot is from 7.30 p.m., with 10 to 15 minutes per act depending on the number of performers. Original music only for the open slots and all music lovers are welcome.

Tina Louise Avery

Feature act for the occasion is Tina Louise Avery. Tina’s thought-provoking songs draw on real and fictional places and the people and emotions she encounters there.  Her clear-voiced lyrics are accompanied by her distinctive finger-picking style.  Her influences range from Paul Simon and Suzanne Vega to Natalie Merchant and Kate Bush. 

Tina has launched two EPs so far, Riverman (2013) and Tea Amongst the Birds (2017). She has played support at the Edinburgh and Leith Folk Clubs, and in January 2017 she was selected for the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections- a career highlight!  She has also staged two fundraising gigs for the charity WaterAid showcasing local singer-songwriters and locally baked cakes for a great cause!  Come & listen to her musical stories…

Callaghan and Farrell

Feature act this week is Callaghan and Farrell. Gerry Callaghan is a storyteller in song, ranging from tender country ballads to gritty Glasgow street songs. John Farrell, one of the most tasteful and versatile guitarists in town complements Gerry’s big-hearted tales exquisitely. It’s taken them long enough to find each other but it’s a perfect match – don’t miss them!
