Hello. OOTB have booked yet another great featured act this week. Dave Keir has been songwriting, gigging and recording since his youth. With such experience out there in the world of music, and with some European tours under his belt you can be rest-assured of a top quality performance. Dave’s music has a distinctive folk influence played with a strong finger-picking style on acoustic guitar which he is well recognised for. His vocals carry enchanting melodies with thoughtful deep lyrics which can’t help but draw you into Dave’s cleverly crafted songs.

The Open Mics page will be updated for November, at latest, by next Monday or Tuesday. You will notice that the Ale House will be later excluded as it is closing down for refurbishment on 10th November and re-opening mid December possibly under a new name. Open mic events are still being held there presently on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays right up until the closing date. Well worth a visit or two.

Hello and all that sort of thing (ting-a-ling). OOTB have booked an incredible and experienced band as this week’s featured act. A New International, formerly The Starlets, are a rather talented group of musicians who have toured across Europe and as far as Japan. Their sound comprises a unique mix of styles drawn from their musical history where vocals, guitars, accordions and violins come in to play. Hello all o’ yeez. OOTB have booked a great headline act this week. Ross Neilson has been playing his catchy and memorable songs on the Edinburgh music scene for many years. His back catalogue spans an impressive eleven albums worth of music ranging from hard hitting post punk anthems to more delicate acoustic folk pieces. Now playing completely as a solo acoustic artist, he takes his influences from the likes of Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, and Tom Petty to name a few.

Hello. My heart sinks when I’m reluctantly shopping in the local supermarket and one of my regular grocery purchases has printed on the packaging, ‘New Recipe’ or ‘Improved Recipe’. What it really means is that the company claiming this is actually making a financial loss and has to cut quality corners to save cash. Cheaper and nastier ingredients are used instead with the taste, look and texture results being rather downgraded to what I was used to. Food gets worse as prices get higher.

More thought for food is featured act this week who is a regular performer in Edinburgh going by the name of Dog On A Swing. We are very pleased to have Ed Ritchie play for us at OOTB again. If you haven’t heard him by now, now here is your chance!

I play music under the name of Dog On A Swing, a cross between a band and a solo project. I’ll be joined on the night by the excellent James Whyte. Hello. Featured act this week is talented singer-songwriter Joel Thomas. Having recently located to Edinburgh, Joel has been delighting audiences with his acoustic songs which are performed delicately and precisely. His style has folk influences where the vocal melodies carry stories of love, life and human behaviour accompanied by Joel’s simple but effective finger-picking method on guitar. He will be helped along this Saturday with members of his band which includes someone playing a saw. Not to be missed.

An up-and-coming gig worth mentioning and for a good cause is Blooming Heathers Maggie’s Edinburgh Fundraiser. It’s on Wednesday 9th October starting at 7:30pm. A Maggie’s Centre fundraiser in combination with Blooming Heathers fundraising campaign aiming to raise enough funds to run the centre for a day. This is equally a tribute to Fraser Drummond, a great musician and gardener of repute. Four great bands – Sam Barber and The Outcasts, Ms. Fi and the Lost Head Band, Norman Lamont and The Invisible Helpers and Lisa Rigby.

“Eh…excuse me, could you please pass the salt and the little bowl of lemon dragees as well? Thank you”, said some random two-dimensional character at a generic dinner party one hopelessly mundane evening that crawled ever so slowly into the dark abyss of some night. ‘Dragees’ is a strange word you never really hear of, or used in any conventional conversation. If someone actually said ‘dragees’ then it would only be worthy of strange confused looks coming back at the poor unfortunate naive sod who was dumb enough to ever bare that word at all in such naked public scrutiny. To me it sounds more like a one-word description of trainee cross-dressers. It’s actually of French origin and usually describes a small sugar-coated sweet of some sort, even a medicinal pill coated with sugar to disguise the taste.

Hello. OOTB 534 is upon us with an amazing featured act booked in this Saturday. Allan Dixon played at the very first incarnation of OOTB many years ago and then moved to Los Angeles to make music for films. When he returned to OOTB a few months ago, he brought the BBC to film him. He amazed us all when he played OOTB a few months back, and he has since. Now here is another chance to find out why!

Hello. I hate carrier bags. They are annoyingly noisy, particularly when a strong Scottish wind blows hard on filled shopping bags creating a loud rippling rasping sound as I walk home. Catching the attention of passers-by who peer through the thin plastic transparent sacks noting two packs of toilet paper bulging through. “Oh look at him, he’s off home to do a great big doofer. Hope he’s got some Airwick in there too. Serves him right for buying four pizzas, three microwave meals and a Pot Noodle. Bastard!”

Anyway, let’s get onto this Saturday’s featured act. The Keystone Project was created by musician and producer Ross Taylor and singer/songwriter Jane Gilbert. In the hazy wild days of their youth, Jane and Ross first wrote together in the mission hall studios down in Leithshire. After a long stint away from home, Jane has returned to Edinburgh to join forces once again with the talented Mr Taylor. Working on a new EP ‘Limited Stop’, The Keystone Project have refined their unique sound. With Jane’s ethereal vocals and Ross’s extreme multi-instrumentalist skills, they have created a musical monster.

Hello. We’re back! Just so there’s no misunderstanding, Post Festival Open Slots is not a weird celebration of wooden poles in which OOTB have pre-excavated deep holes in the ground for embedding such items for your convenience in readiness for a linage of telegraph-poles or some big tent sort of thing (ting-a-ling). My god perish the thought of us doing something so obscure, industrial and mundane. Post Festival Open Slots is here to sooth our after-festival tourist-ridden headaches with an evening of original music and unique performances.

We start off at 8pm this Saturday, but turn up sometime before 7:30pm to book a fifteen-minute slot of stage time if you fancy showing us what you got. It’s original material only, be it of song, music or spoken word. Free entry as always.
