17th birthdayOut of the Bedroom 679 is on Thursday 1st November and it is going to be a bit special, as it will be 17 years since OOTB started. There will be cake and there will be great music as usual. I hope you can join in – all are welcome, including those hundreds of musicians who have played over the years but maybe not for some time.

Leith’s Woodland Creatures is, as usual, hosting from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Entry is free and sign up for an open mic slot is from 7.30 p.m., with 10 to 15 minutes per act depending on the number of performers. Original music only for the open slots and all music lovers are welcome.

Tina Louise Avery

Feature act for the occasion is Tina Louise Avery. Tina’s thought-provoking songs draw on real and fictional places and the people and emotions she encounters there.  Her clear-voiced lyrics are accompanied by her distinctive finger-picking style.  Her influences range from Paul Simon and Suzanne Vega to Natalie Merchant and Kate Bush.

Tina has launched two EPs so far, Riverman (2013) and Tea Amongst the Birds (2017). She has played support at the Edinburgh and Leith Folk Clubs, and in January 2017 she was selected for the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections- a career highlight!  She has also staged two fundraising gigs for the charity WaterAid showcasing local singer-songwriters and locally baked cakes for a great cause!  Come & listen to her musical stories…

Jim Bryce

Our feature act this week is Jim Bryce. Jim is… unique. If you want a “typical singer-songwriter” – whatever that is – you’re not going to get it. Bryce veers wildly from dissonant boogie-woogie to rock to MOR, from jazz-tinged musings to elegiac pibroch to music-hall. The influences are legion; the results unmistakably Bryce. Jim’s lyrics can be political, achingly beautiful, witty or plain daft. As a composer, he has written for BBC, theatres the length of the country, Ceebeebies and squeaky stuff for the concert-hall, with works performed at the Ravenna Festival and on the Edinburgh Fringe.

“Decidedly quirky songs, somewhere between boogie-woogie and advanced atonality” (The Scotsman) “Randy Newman after a pint of Pimms” (RBL music). “The Noel Coward for our generation.” (Joe Goldblatt) “Strums a guitar, plonks a keyboard, and has no idea why he’s here.” (Jim Bryce)

Rosie’s first Out of the Bedroom performance was also her open mic debut, back in February, with her first three original songs. She has since expanded her repertoire of melancholy songs, often reminiscent of the sad Scottish folksongs, which she is also a keen performer of. Rosie’s other main influences are Joan Baez, Simon and Garfunkel, and Billy Bragg. Most of her music centres around a poignant and mournful expression of love, heartbreak, and healing.
