OOTB 418 – Andy Paul + FREE MP3!!!!

Posted 04/04/2011 By admin

Hullo, hullo, hullo!

So, it’s been rockin’ at Out of the Bedroom recently, we had a particularly breathtaking brace of performers last week, many of them totally new to OOTB. If you’re only coming along to see your favourites, then you’re probably missing the best stuff, it’s as simple as that.

One performer who’s been excellent every time he’s played is Andy Paul, who’s our featured act this week at the Montague on Tuesday. He’s not been in evidence at OOTB for a few weeks, so if you want to catch him (and you really should, he’s got catchy, quirky and original songs by the bunchload) then you’ll need to come along to OOTB this week. 8pm at the Montague Bar on Tuesday 5 April.

What else have we got for you in the silver bag o’ dreams this week? It’s a FREE AND TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE MP3 from Darren Thornberry!Darren Thornberry is a past president of OOTB now living in Colorado, USA. His band, Thorn’s Musical Journey, was formed right here in Edinburgh and is an ongoing international collaborative. Incidentally, for this song, Darren recorded his guitar/vocal in Colorado, and guitarist Ross Baird added his parts in Edinburgh – making what we hope you agree is a lovely transatlantic song.

By the way, i hope you got your free Lorraine McCauley download from last week, if not, then hotfoot it over to the OOTB website and download it because these mp3s will be removed from the site after three weeks! Also, tell all your mates to sign up for the newsletter if they’d like the free MP3s as well, would you? In fact tell everyone you meet, what a great way to make new friends! 🙂

Okay…  some upcoming events for you, though as usual, there will be many more if you keep your eyes and ears open. Here are a few that i know about though:

Tuesday 5 April – it’s Out of the Bedroom at the Montague Bar, it’s free, starts at 8pm, and the featured act is the highly talented Andy Paul.

Wednesday 6 April – It’s Secret CDs XXXXI, featuring Birdhead, Polly and the Billets Doux, Sparrahawk, and Rosie Nimmo. All this for only £3 at the Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy, 19a West Register Street at 8pm.

Thursday 7 AprilLipsync For A Lullaby are performing at the TT April Fool’s Memorial at Henry’s Cellar Bar, just off Lothian Road at 8pm. Also featuring Tokamak, and Sileni vs. COWTSHTF

Also on Thursday 7 April, the READeasy Writers’ Group is on at the Forest Cafe at 6pm.

Friday 8 AprilJump Press A are playing a set at the Scrapbrain single launch at Maggie’s Chamber on the Cowgate, and so are Lady North and Art of Privilege, at 7:30pm. And it’s only £3.

Sunday 10 April – It’s the launch of the new CD by Lindsay and The Storm at the Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy, 19a West Register Street at 7.30pm (finishing by 10pm). It’s £4/£3 (and CDs at bargain price!), and there will be support slots from James Whyte, and Caro Bridges And The River.

And while i’m here, just wanted to remind you to buy your tickets for the Wedding Ball on 21 April, in aid of the MS Society Scotland. It’s at Teviot Row House at 8pm on Thursday 21 April, and you’re encouraged to go wearing wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, top hats and tails, and all the usual wedding finery. And it’s all in a good cause of course. Buy your tickets here.

Okay, great, tons of stuff’s happening, it’s all good, don’t waste this week watching dodgy reruns from last decade on the TV, get out there are experience some live music. And get everybody else you know along as well, they might enjoy it if they tried it! See you all on Tuesday…

Out of the Bedroom

Hi everybody,

We’ve got a very special featured act for you this week, it’s Lorraine McCauley. She’s moving to England very shortly, and this will be her final gig before she goes. Don’t miss it! Seriously, don’t. That’s at Out of the Bedroom 417, at the Montague Bar, 8pm start (7:30pm if you want to perform in one of the open slots), and it’s free to get in!

If that’s not enough for you, this week we’re beginning our “Featured MP3 series, and to kick us off, it’s an excellent song from Lorraine McCauley:

Haunt Me by Lorraine McCauley
Here’s an alternative download link (right click to save)

Lorraine’s very very good, and you can hear more of her music on her myspace page. Now, be aware this mp3 will only be available on the OOTB website for the next three weeks, so get it quick while it’s hot.

Now, we had our AGM last week and elected the new OOTB committee, which is as follows:

Chairman: Daniel Davis
Secretary: Nyk Stoddart
Treasurer: Steve Osborne
Sound Officer: Malcolm Mclean
Events Officer: Tom Watton
Web Officer: Calum Carlyle

I’ll be updating the website with a nice friendly “meet the gang” page sometime soon.

Right, on to the upcoming events…

Tonight (Sun 27 Mar) it’s Emma Kullander at the Listening Room, at the Blue Blazer on Bread Street, open slots from 8pm, Emma is on from 9pm, and it’s free.

Also tonight (Sunday 27th March) at Whistle Binkies on Niddry Street. Supermarionation (http://www.supermarionation.co.uk) will be live and on stage at about 9:30pm for a good 45 minutes. And it’s free.

And then there’s OOTB on Tuesday at the Montague and also the Ale House open mic at 9:30pm in the Ale House on Clerk Street on Friday (1 April, but also every Friday). There are a lot more gigs going on by the way, but most of the gig invites i’ve had recently have been bands that haven’t ever come along to OOTB, so i can’t really justify pushing them here, but check your FB inbox and i bet you’ll find a ton of good gigs to go to.

Okay, don’t miss Lorraine on Tuesday, and keep an eye on www.outofthebedroom.co.uk for details of who we’ve got coming up in future weeks, there will be some special performances for sure (plenty of you missed Colin Milne‘s excellent performance last week, plenty of you did come along though, and hopefully you enjoyed it as much as i did. But don’t worry, I’m going to put him on at Edinburgh Unplugged soon i hope, so you can come and hear him in all his acoustic glory).

Oh yes, and remember to go and check out the web forums, there are plenty of songwriters already hanging out there, go and make some connections or find a new performer to enjoy. Ok, see you out there in musicland!

OOTB Presents…

I’m a bit behind this week, so this will be a quick OOTB email.

Firstly, and most importantly, it’s Colin Milne playing the featured act slot this week at OOTB 416 (on Tuesday 22 March). He promises me all his songs have been fully researched, and if you have heard Colin’s songs that should be enough to raise an eyebrow! Not only does Colin make his own musical instruments (and very well too), but i think this is the first time he’s played a half hour set, it’s definitely his first OOTB featured act set. Don’t miss this anyway, it will definitely be unique. It’s free, and it’s at the Montague Bar on St Leonards Street, starting at 8pm (7:30pm for open mic performers to sign up).

And for those of you who missed Atomic Pigeon last week (and i hope you’ve got your excuse notes ready, you missed a good one!) you can hear one of their songs again at some point in the near future as one of our Featured mp3s (starting sooooon, i promise), tell everyone you know who likes free mp3s…

Thursday 24th March sees the first OOTB AGM in nearly two years! It’s at the Montague Bar on Thursday at 7pm. That’s 7pm promptly, as we need to be finished before 9pm and we have a lot to get through. The main event will be the re-election of the OOTB committee, as well as various operational things, so if you’re interested in the running of OOTB or you want to get involved, then we’ll see you on Thursday at 7pm.

Finally, I’ll just mention a gig i’ve been asked to include, on Sunday 27th March at Whistle Binkies. Supermarionation (http://www.supermarionation.co.uk) will be live and on stage at about 9:30pm for a good 45 minutes. And it’s free.

Also, on Sunday 27th March, you can hear Conscious Route (who are very good, and very lively) performing live at Red Dog Music in the Grassmarket, also free, and it’s at 3pm on Sunday.

Then the following Sunday (3 April), i’m hosting another OOTB open couch session at Red Dog Music, at 3pm, so just turn up with your banjos, mandolins, trumpets, and what have you, and we’ll all have a good old fashioned jam session. and that’s a week on Sunday.

That’s it for now, i’ll be back next week with (probably) some feedback from the OOTB AGM, (hopefully) the first in our series of featured mp3s, and (definitely) some more choice gigs you could be going to. See you all on Tuesday!

OOTB Presents…

Good afternoon one and all, it’s a bit rainy here in Edinburgh, slightly snowy maybe, but at least we’ve not got earthquakes and tsunamis and so on. That sort of thing certainly makes me count my blessings, and of course my thoughts go out to anyone who’s been affected by the tragedies in Japan and elsewhere.

Now, on to the usual business of this email, first of all i’ll just let you know that the featured act at OOTB this week (Tue 15 Mar) is Atomic Pigeon! These guys are perhaps Edinburgh’s best kept secret as far as full size acoustic bands are concerned, i fully recommend you come and check them out while you can, they’ll be playing a full half hour set for us tomorrow night at the Montague Bar for free! 8pm start, 7:30pm for performers to sign up.

So that’s Tuesday. Then on Thursday (17 Mar), Sam Barber and the Outcasts are playing at Mr Modos at 7pm.

On Saturday, there are two acts on neither of which have been to OOTB, but what the heck, eh? I’ll tell you about them anyway. One of them’s Sacre Noir (who will be performing at Edinburgh Unplugged in April under a nom-de-plume), and they’re playing at Belushi’s on Market Street at 9pm on Saturday (19 Mar) and it’s free.

Also on Saturday, you can hear Conscious Route, a very enjoyable and energetic band (who secretly have Hannah Werdmuller in them, and who will be playing at Edinburgh Unplugged in May), and they’re playing at Maggie’s Chamber at 7pm on Saturday (19 Mar).

Remember the McEwans Ale House open mic is still going strong, every Friday night at 9:30pm, and the Listening Room every Sunday at 8pm, not to mention the various other nights that are always going on and which are an enjoyable night out (at The Royal Oak, The Captain’s Bar, Espionage, The Jazz Bar etc, check your FB invites…)

And it’s not long before we’ll be giving you a free mp3 every week in this newsletter, i’m just collecting mp3s from some of our featured performers and hope to roll this out starting in the next few weeks.

I think that’s it for now, see you on Tuesday!

OOTB 414 – James Igoe!

Posted 06/03/2011 By admin

Hi there everybody and welcome to March! 🙂

Right, first of all if you’re reading this on Sunday (6 March) before 3pm then get yourself down to Red Dog Music in the Grassmarket for the Hair of the Dog Open Couch Session. I’m hosting it, and basically we’ll all just pass a guitar around and do a song each, and if you bring your mandolin/xylophone/nose flute/saxophone etc then you can play along too. That’s at 3pm at Red Dog Music and it’s free.

This Tuesday (8 March) at Out of the Bedroom 414 the featured act is James Igoe! You’ve seen him at Secret CDs, you may (if you’re lucky) have heard him do one or two songs here and there but i can’t remember the last time he did a half hour set, so don’t miss this. Some open slots available as well of course, so come along to the Montague Bar on Tuesday at 8pm (7:30pm for performers).

A Wedding Ball In Aid Of The MS Society Scotland

A Wedding Ball In Aid Of The MS Society Scotland

Oh here’s a news item, it’s the return of the OOTB web forums! Well, pretty much. If you go to the Out of the Bedroom website, you’ll see a link to the web forums, it’s a new web board called “Songwriters Anonymous, Songwriters Advance!” and the OOTB website has teamed up with them to provide you all with a web board to communicate with each other, and with other songwriters round the world. A couple of OOTB folk are already using the board, as are plenty of other interesting songwriters and musicians, so bookmark it and make it one of your regular hangouts.

Back to today (Sunday 6 March), i heard a rumour that it’s Lisa Rigby doing the featured act slot at tonight’s Listening Room at the Blue Blazer, however the Listenig Room’s myspace fails to confirm this, so take your chances (no it’s okay, facebook says it’s Lisa Rigby anyway), open slots from 8pm, featured act from 9pm.

You can, however, hear Lisa’s band Townhouse in full on Wednesday night (9 March) at Edinburgh Unplugged, which is in the basement bar of The Royal Oak on Infirmary Street. The gig starts at 8pm and it’s only £2 to get in, and you get to hear four bands! Get there promptly if you want a proper seat, by the way. The full lineup this Wednesday is: Townhouse, The Wild Myrtles, The Graeme Mearns Band, and Eilidh Steel and Mark Neal, all playing fully acoustically!

Let’s see, on Thursday (10 March) you can see Augustalia and the Remnant Kings at the Caley Sample Rooms at 8pm, i’m not sure how much it costs, but there it is.

One other thing i wanted to mention to you is a “Wedding Ball” which is happening in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland. It’s at Teviot Row House at 8pm on Thursday 21st of April, and you’re encouraged to go wearing wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, top hats and tails, and all the usual wedding finery. And it’s all in a good cause of course.

Finally, Darren Thornberry‘s just put a whole lot of free download songs on his reverbnation page, so go get ’em while they’re hot!

Hmm, that’s it for this week i think, see you at Red Dog this afternoon (and on Tuesday!

Calum Carlyle
Out of the Bedroom

Welcome to the week! The sun is out and everybody’s happy even though it’s Monday.

Okay, this Tuesday (tomorrow, 1 March) at OOTB our featured act is James Whyte, who has some excellent songs, and is rarely heard in a live setting these days, certainly not for a full half hour set. Come along and check it out, and of course all the open slots will be up for grabs as usual. 8pm start, 7:30pm to sign up, at the Montague Bar on St Leonards Street.

There’s an OOTB special event i have to tell you about too. at 3pm at Red Dog Music in the Grassmarket (across the road from The Lot) on Sunday 6 March, I will be hosting a special Out of the Bedroom “Hair of the Dog Open Couch Session”. I’ll be there with my guitar from 3pm to 4:30pm and basically we’ll just sit on the couch and pass the guitar round, and if you play a mandolin or a melodica or something, please bring it along too and join in. It’ll be a lot less formal that Out of the Bedroom, and hopefully a lot of fun. It’s a one-off too, to some extent, so don’t miss it, and i’ll hopefully see you all there.

Other things happening this week include Secret CDs number 40, yet another excellent lineup, here’s the lineup for this month:

LIPSYNC FOR A LULLABY www.myspace.com/lipsyncforalullaby
Post-rock band Lipsync for a Lullaby is a strings-driven five-piece playing classical harmonies, beats of slo-core, metal gore, remains of post-rock, ashes of punk with new EP ‘The Lonely Blues’.
IONA MARSHALL
www.myspace.com/ionamarshall
Based in Glasgow after making her name in Edinburgh, Iona’s unique mix of melodic folk and ambient electronica has been captured on a 10” EP with HMS Ginafore (Fence Collective).
THE DULL FUDDS
www.dullfudds.co.uk
From the Borders The Dull Fudds play an inspired mix of styles in an upbeat self-deprecating crackers fashion. Katie and Jenny will be playing a pared-down set of ‘Fudds favourites.
HANNAH WERDMULLER
www.myspace.com/hannahwerdmuller
Relatively new to the Edinburgh acoustic scene but writing music since aged 10. Hannah uses guitars, ukuleles and a trio of clones, when playing songs about death, love, toes and zoo animals.

I personally think each of these performers is worth the entrance price alone, so to get all four of them at once is excellent. And that’s on this Wednesday (2 March) at the Voodoo Rooms on West Register Street at 8pm.

Oh yes, tonight (28 February) at Maggie’s Chambers on the Cowgate, it’s Something Illustrated, The Amsterdams and Hot Cassandra at 7:30pm. I can’t remember the admission cost, but i’m guessing £5 or £4. Here’s the link anyway.

What else… oh yes, remember the McEwan’s Ale House open mic on Friday, at 9pm, across the road from the old Odeon on Clerk Street.

I’m just going to quickly mention FAWM again. Hundreds of songwriters the world over have been writing songs throughout February, and this year there have been more from Edinburgh than ever before. Here are some demos of the songs to check out:
Songwriters from Edinburgh
Songwriters from Midlothian
Songwriters from East Lothian
And remember to check out songs by people from round the world too, click here for a good list to get you started.

One or two other quick things, remember it’s the OOTB AGM on 24th March, venue and time still to be confirmed, but it’s a big meeting which you should come along to if you want to help out at OOTB. More details on the website nearer the time.

Also, just wanted to mention i’m hatching a plot to give readers of this list a free mp3 every week from a performer who has played at Out of the Bedroom. Watch this space for more details. Don’t know quite how soon it’ll be up and running, but i just wanted to make you aware that readers of this list will soon be able to look forward to more than just my gig listings and related ramblings.

That’s about it for this week, remember to check your myspaces and facebooks for gigs from your favourite bands, and i’ll be back next week to tell you about more good, inexpensive musical events (including the much anticipated Edinburgh Unplugged vol. 3).

OOTB 412 – Paper Truth

Posted 20/02/2011 By admin
OOTB Presents…

Welcome to another week! Click the links! Go to the gigs! Get involved! Do it now before it’s too late!!!

Okay, this week the featured act is Paper Truth, a quirky and original songwriter that you may have heard at Out of the Bedroom recently, and if you were at January’s Edinburgh Unplugged, you’ve heard him for sure. Well, you can get another dose of his to-the-point pop on Tuesday (22 Feb) at the Montague Bar on the corner of Montague and St Leonards Streets.

While i’m at it, hope you’ve all seen the review of OOTB 410, it were a good ‘un. Nice to get a review as well, so thanks, chaps, for doing this.

Also, might i mention the OOTB AGM? For the first time in over a year and a half, we’re having an Out of the Bedroom Annual General Meeting to elect a new committee and discuss many things which relate to the running of the night. If you want to get involved with Out of the Bedroom in any way, then come along to the OOTB AGM on 24th March. Time and location are still to be confirmed, but what’s life without a bit of uncertainty, after all?

Okay, now onto a few current events. Today (Sun 20 Feb), there are tons. at 3pm, Red Dog Music have got the Ordinary Allstars at 3pm (for free), then at 5pm at The Forest it’s the TransCollectiV (featuring Nick Splinter Smith), also for free. Then at 8pm you’ve got a choice. It’s The Listening Room at The Blue Blazer from 8pm, featuring John Mowbray from Fanattica, or else it’s Tim Holehouse and Duncan from Electric Mud Generator playing at Forest (also 8pm, also free).

Tomorrow (Mon 21 Feb), migrant volunteers invite you to attend an evening of stories, songs and poems on the theme of love, featuring Lorraine McCauley and the Borderlands. It’s from 6pm to 9pm at the Fort Community Wing on North Fort Street, and i’m fairly certain it’s free. I’ll certainly be checking this out.

On Thursday (24 Feb) at Cab Vol, it’s The Industry, Three Long Words and Curators. It’s a 7pm start and it’s £4 to get in. It’s been a while since i’ve been to see some impressive young rock bands, so i think i’ll be at that one too, if the good lord’s willing and the creeks don’t rise…

On Friday (25 Feb) at Word Of Mouth (on the corner of Albert Street and Leith Walk), it’s an LGBT open mic night in support of LGBT gay / lesbian / transgender History Month. It’s free to get in, BYOB, and it’s 7pm-10pm.

Then on Saturday 26 Feb Underclass are launching their single at the Bongo Club, i assume it’s a 7pm start because they told me they’d be on just before 9pm (though i am sure their support acts are worth checking out too, though again, they didn’t tell me who they were). £5 admission.

Also on Saturday 26 Feb you could go and see Supermarionation (featuring OOTB regular Steve Tonge) at Cabaret Voltaire, also starring Night Noise Team, UKReign and The Regiment, £6 entry, 7pm start.

Then on Sunday we’re back to where we started! More music listings from me next week, hope to see you out there at one of these events, it’s great fun, i promise you. Especially the new look Out of the Bedroom at the Montague.

OOTB 411 – Tim Holehouse

Posted 13/02/2011 By admin

OOTB Presents…

Hello again everybody. Well, OOTB 410 was excellent, and what’s more there’s a review of it on the Out of the Bedroom website! Hope you enjoy.

Now, on Tuesday (15 Feb) at Out of the Bedroom 411 it’s Tim Holehouse, former Edinburgh resident and regular player at OOTB in the Canon’s Gait days, he now tours full time playing his trademark self penned acoustic music everywhere he goes. Catch him back in Edinburgh at the Montague Bar from 8pm. Open slots as usual of course, so please turn up before 7:30pm if you’d like to perform.

Other stuff i should tell you about… Tonight (13 Feb) at The Listening Room in the Blue Blazer (on Bread Street from 8pm) the featured performer is Susanna Orr-Holland. She’s got a wealth of interesting songs, definitely an original performer.

Also tonight (13 Feb), i just saw this on Nicky Carder‘s FB status: “Tonight in Edinburgh The Deep Red Sky, Squirrel (This Silent Forest), Caro Bridges and the River and Jill Leighton will be at the Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy from 7pm. There is a massive discount to the local regulars so come along if you’re around.”

Tomorrow (14 Feb) you could go to the Inky Fingers anti-Valentine poetry slam, it’s at the City Cafe at 8pm and admission is a suggested £4/3 donation.

Tuesday it’s Out of the Bedroom, of course, featuring Tim Holehouse, free entry, from 8pm, at the Montague Bar, bring everyone you know…

And i just got this from the amazing comedy genius Tommy Mackay, check out his new FB page and treat yourself to some hilarious tunes. And remember to click “Like”.

Next Sunday (20 Feb) you can hear Rossco Galloway and the Chans performing at Joseph Pearce bar on Elm Row (near London Road/Leith Walk) for free from 6:30-9:30pm

A week on Monday (21 Feb), by the way, Lorraine McCauley and the Borderlands are performing in Edinburgh at Fort Community Wing at Fort Primary School on North Fort Street. It’s an evening of stories, songs and poems on the theme of love, and it runs from 6pm to 9pm.

I am certain there are many more cool events going on, just keep your ears and eyes open for them. And if you’ve not heard some of these performers i’ve just mentioned then go and google them. I didn’t put links to all their myspace pages this week, but there’s a lot of good music out there for somebody with an active search engine. Have a good week, see you at the Montague Bar on Tuesday!

STOP PRESS – Get involved with OOTB

Posted 09/02/2011 By admin

Forgot to mention it on the email this week, but we’re having our first Out of the Bedroom committee meeting in several months tomorrow night (Thursday 10th February) at the Montague Bar at 6:30pm.

It’s open to anyone to attend, and we’d encourage you to come along if you want to get involved with OOTB. We will be discussing all sorts of minutae about the Out of the Bedroom night and how to proceed with running it, and we’ll also be looking for volunteers to do the sound desk and to compere the night. Hope to see you there!

“THE BAND WERE TIGHTER THAN A CHAFFINCH’S CHUFF!”

A Strategic Review of OUT OF THE BEDROOM #410 (with doodles)

Reviewed by Tom Watton, Steve Tonge, and Garret Morgan.

 Nick Splinter Smith

Fighting on behalf of all 70’s teenagers, the Splinter’s rock/jazz/blues chord fusions a lively kick start to the 410th occurrence of Out of the Bedroom. Nick’s tunes remind the panel of T-Rex – BOLANESQUE !

Nick is appearing at the Forest on the 20th February at 5pm with the Transcollective.

 Colin Milne

Colin starts the set with his unique and subtle guitar style. Listening to Colin is always a pleasant reminder of homely family gatherings. Colin performs with a refreshingly traditional style, and really takes the audience to paradise and back again. Colin received an impressive applause which crescendoed spectacularly. Colin you left your music stand at the Montague – we shall endeavour to protect it for you !

Toby ShippeyToby Shippey

Toby starts his set with electronica style guitar and a soft semi-spoken singing style reminiscent of Shawn Mullins. Then Toby reveals his secret falsetto range set to an imaginative melody to introduce the chorus.  Great singing – !

Toby’s second number is one which was well received at ‘The Listening Room’ the previous Sunday. Toby was joined at the LR by Gavin Taylor on the Slide Dobro (resonator); (which we were bowled over by). Today however Toby reminded us that he can deliver quality all by himself.

 Tremendous.

Garrett Morgan (reviewed by Steve Tonge, and Tom Watton)

Garrett MorganSlicker than a car salesman at a pomade convention, Garrett’s OOTB inauguration is well received. Over the last few weeks he has made some regular appearances at several Edinburgh based open mic nights. Garrett has often played covers on these occasions, something which he admits he is not comfortable doing. Garrett should stick to performing his own material as it is a more relaxed recital of his melancholic songs.

Garrett is one American import that we really don’t want to see sent back across the North Atlantic. Keep ’em coming buddy!

Andy Paul

Andy has been the exciting new addition in the last few weeks of the local open mic scene.

Andy’s complicated flamenco derived full hand brushed crossed- rhythmed guitar riffs (which he makes look easy) provide a wonderful setting for his creative and clever lyrics, which draw inspiration from an urban style.

Andy puts body and soul into his performances, and he makes his out of tune guitar sound purposeful. For a preliminary listen to ‘Andy’s records’, go to soundcloud.com/andy-paul.

Andy’s appearances have guitarists, singers and songwriters nodding along and surrendering the genuine heart felt applause.

Owen

Owen is a very confident performer, and his songs are ‘singalongable’. Owen’s jaunty style belies his deep felt lyrical pain. Owen only had a ‘shorty’ set (remember if you want a full set please come down at 7.30pm).

Nyk Stoddart

Nyk’s natural range has a very haunting and cinematic sound. Nyk is often overlooked and shelved along with the abstract lunatic rambling category; in keeping often with the subject and presentation of many of his songs.

Today though I really believe that Nyk puts his hat in the ring to be considered the best of the open slots at #410. Nyk is clearly more than capable of composing truly moving songs with sophisticated chords and sealed with an inverted cadence.

Johnny Pugh

Johnny will be appearing at OOTB on March 15th with his band Atomic Pigeon.

Johnny’s songwriting style solders together a Jusif Islam (Cat Stephens)/ sound with a Celtic vibe which would not be out of place in a Capercaillie album. Johhny won the new look crazier than crazy  raffle and was duly awarded the vibrant and joyous prize of the recorder! – TOP NOTCH!

INTERVAL – during which we reviewed the Montague!

 The Montague

The Montague is a relaxing setting for OOTB the white sofas and arm chairs are comfortable, if not a bit over crowded with instruments, musicians and friends of musicians. The bar is clean, but homely, and the bar is bright and spacious, without the empty or soulless feeling which you may get in an urban chain pub.

The Tommy poster and other various film and music memorabilia in the OOTB half may provide inspiration for our performers. While the library around the other side of the bar is stocked with good reads.

We should mention that we are all very grateful for the enthusiasm which JeanYves Van de Kieft has shown us in the first few weeks of the new look OOTB.

End Of Interval!

A Bridge

A Bridge

Caro Bridges and the River

(Featured Set)

with

Caro on Guitar, Songwriting, and Vocals

Matt Norris on Violin, Mandolin, Banjo and backing vocals

Thom MacColl on Double Bass, and Backing Vocals,

Emily Nicholl on Violin, Percussion and Paper

Caro is a well appreciated and established acoustic act on the Edinburgh scene. Whether with her band or not, Caro ‘never ceases to keep us entertained‘. Caro started the featured set with the History of Aviation, a musical narration of the history of man made flight.

The band were thoroughly rehearsed and to coin a phrase were tighter then a chaffinch’s chuff.

Caro has many creative songs, and its a shame that we only got to hear a few of them. Caro’s style is hard to describe because she is an accomplished guitarist and is therefore not limited to the same four chords that many of us feel bound to. Each song therefore is its own genre, the second of which whisked us away to a Mediterranean/Moroccan space. Accompanied by Emily on the violin, who plays the fiddle with a proficient tone.

Our personal moment of total bliss (demonstrated by an exuberant outburst of “yes”, coinciding with much air-pulling) during the set was caused by Matt’s wonderful banjo augmentation during the jazzy number. Described by Garrett as ‘sick’, and my self as ‘explicit’. It really brought the set into the next tier of quality sounds, usually reserved for the likes of Martha Tilston, and Rosie Doonan. The bass at the same time was sounding both clean and clearly defined, with lovely movements that we have come to expect from Thom MacColl. Tremendous.

In fact, so tremendous was the whole performance I was inspired to draw a demonstration of Air-pulling, [and thus leaving you without a review for some of the performance – which if you were there you know was brilliant, and if you weren’t there – that is your own fault, not mine!] here is said diagram.

Caro Bridges and The River will be supporting Matt Norris and The Moon at Sneaky Pete’s on the 3rd of March – more info coming your way in the next few weeks.

Debbie Kate

Another newbie to OOTB, Debbie has an amazing voice, and truly is a great songwriter. Her song ‘Pennies to the Ocean’ had Garrett sitting himself ‘on a sandy beach being warmed but the sun‘. After some confusion between me (mainly me) and Steve, we agreed that Debbie had an early Cerys Matthews vocal sound (and not a Kerry Katona sound). The self proclaimed ‘Edinburgh Virgin’ was much admired by the then relaxing Caro Bridges, who liked her to an organic Norah Jones/Ellie Golding. A really relaxed and professional appearance, and we look forward to hearing more in the future!

Weather Underground

Deep Man; Deep…

…Very Deep…

…Like, Super-Deep. A Solid showcase.

Gabriel

Gabriel has a very spacious sound. An in answer to his song – we believe it too!

In the words of Garrett “So nice, so so nice”.

Julien

Accompanied by Matt Norris on Mandolin

Next week’s OOTB will be the day after St. Valentine’s Day, and Julien’s music is suitably Romantic, eat your hearts out girls!

Even though Julien is singing alone, it is easy  to imagine the sound of a hoard of choristers maximising the potential of these great songs.

To summarise… Romance is alive and Waltzing is the new black!

Gavin Taylor

Gavin, mentioned earlier for his Listening room duet, treated us once more to the resonated sounds of his Dobro. Gavin’s performance is calm cool can collected and the  sound of the slide is reminiscent of early adventurous Richard Thompson. Gavin’s natural guitar sound transports you to an ‘O’ Brother Where Art Thou?’ American depression. Impressive.

Steve Tonge

Reviewed by Garret & Tom

In Honour of all those left handed guitarists who go to open mic nights, this is left aligned*.

Despite some technical issues Steve managed to pull together a quality performance. Steve’s acoustic performances are great, although like an episode of The Thunderbirds, we know that the spectacular explosions we are witnessing should be taking place in a larger context.

The larger context that Steve’s songs sit in is with his band ‘Supermarionation’, whose album ‘On the Fly’ is out now. Supermarionation are playing at Cabaret Voltaire on the 26th February.

Sir Tom Watton (renamed Sir Pedro Whatton by the reviewers!) (Reviewed by Garret and Steve [with some supplementary after thoughts supplied in square brackets from me!] )

“Metal-core-post-ska-dub-folk” with a hint of Spanish guitar. The messiah to small town country kids, breathing life into their chilly winter nights with excellent reviews and Spanish riffs.

Shameless self promotion of upcoming gigs.

[Feeling like Steve and Garrett were maybe in a different pub when I was on. Here’s me spending ages reviewing and this is all I get! – Nothing about finishing the night with a song about going home, nothing about his new song which he part improvised I mean come on – this was meant to be team work guys. Well thats it!, Now look what you made me type! lol]

To round off the evenings review…

…a great time was had by all, everyone who played was appreciated, and next week will undoubtedly  be brilliant, so don’t miss it!
