OOTB 497 – November 17th – Tau Boo

Posted 13/11/2012 By admin

Tau Boo

Buuuurrp! Β Oh please excuse, still digesting what went on out there in music-land over the weekend. First though, the featured act this week is Tau Boo. TauΒ Boo is short for Taurus Bootis (Latin) which is a star in our galaxy a little more dense than the sun, and reportedly some years ago was supposed to have a solar system quite similar to ours. It was thought that maybe this system had a chance of harbouring some kind of intelligent life. More recent findings however have shown that Tau Boo’s most interesting planet is a very large hot Jupiter style gas giant that orbits very close to its star and is therefore unlikely to be a haven for any life.

What can we say about Tau Boo the musician? Well he’s a solo act who sounds a bit like em…eh…hmm…well you know, sort of like someone who comes across a little bit like…well you know…eh…er…um…maybe kind of like that person who sounds a little bit like you know what, thatΒ sort of thing, possibly. Anyway he is obviously indescribable soΒ get yourselves along this Saturday and delve deeper into the strange yet enthralling mystery that is Tau Boo, and of course book yourself a slot (latest sign up time is usually 7:30pm) if you want to play…

OOTB 496 was an excellent night of music. Dave Robertson, the headline act, gave a spellbinding indie-folk style performance of his songs to a captivated audience last Saturday. Hopefully he will return to our shores soon for more of the same. As always, the performances from all the other musicians who turned up to play proves that Edinburgh still has a vibrant and high quality cauldron of talent. They were Tomas, Nicole Strachan, Roseanne Reid, Nyk Stoddart, Tina Avery, Pol Arida, Kyle Hurley, Calum Carlyle, Graeme Mearns, Bruce Nicol, Alan Henderson, John Crawford and Mike McFarlane. Check them all out on our Photos page.

The Listening Room on Sunday was a great night as well with ‘Lach’ as the featured act giving a notable turnout of people there a very energetic and entertaining show, along with the other folks who were also there to play.

Featured act this week is Australian born Dave Robertson playing an acoustic set for us all. Worth checking out as he lives abroad and is a rare treat to see him perform live in Edinburgh. Dave actually played his first live performances in Scotland a decade ago. His new indie folk band is the Kiss List who you can check out here:

daverobertson.bandcamp.com

Along with the regular open slots and general good fun, Saturday promises to be a great night of music!

Big thanks to everyone who turned up to OOTB-495 whether you were playing or listening. Our night of open slots turned out to be a very enjoyable journey of high quality performances with a good diverse range of styles. We even had a bit of storytelling and illustration! Performers were – Kyle Hurley, Nyk Stoddart, Tau Boo, Dog On A Swing, John Crawford, Simon Herron, Robert King, Tomas, Calum Carlyle, Colin Milne, Alice V., and Pete Wylie. Check them out on our Photos page!

OOTB 468 featuring Damien Casey-Boyce

Posted 31/03/2012 By admin

OOTB Presents… RELENTLESS ENTERTAINMENT!

Hi everybody. Well, it’s Damien Casey-Boyce who’s the featured act at OOTB tonight (Sat 31 March). Basically it starts at 8pm, we have an hour of open floorspots, then Damien Casey-Boyce, then another hour of open floorspots. The open floorspots are usually pretty impressive because everybody has to write their own material (ie: no covers). If you want to sign up for a floorspot by the way, please get there for about 7:15-7:30pm, as it’s first come, first served.

So yeah, it’s FREE and it’s GOOD, and it’s at The Montague Bar on St Leonards Street in Edinburgh. ALSO, if you know anybody who might like this sort of thing (ie: they enjoy music), then please forward this email to them as well. Spread the word, we’ve got FREE LIVE MUSIC every Saturday at The Montague Bar and there’s no point making a secret of it. In fact check out all the upcoming featured acts we’ve got lined up:

Sat 24 March – Jamie and Shoony Eh – very vigorous newcomers to OOTB, total showmen
Sat 31 March – Damian Casey-Boyce – he actually wrote a theme song for OOTB!
Sat 7th April – The Ferny Brackens – wyrd folk music, with very varied song subjects
Sat 14 April – Colin Milne – His songs are full of real life humour and sometimes tragedy
Sat 21 April – Calum Carlyle – Acoustic anti-pop songs for the 21st century
Sat 28 April – Jo Wilson – he’s back from Pakistan, ready to entrance your brain with music
Sat 5th May – The Keep – an all star lineup which has already turned some heads
Sat 12th May – Laurie Cameron – a top flight performer and songwriter
Sat 19th May – John Watton – a truly gifted guitarist with a lot of great songs to boot!
Sat 26th May – Daniel Scott – fresh faced crooner with a charming smile too.

Not only that but what about TOMORROW (Sun 1 April) eh? It’s The Listening Room at The Blue Blazer on the corner of Bread and Spittal Streets just off Lothian Road. It’s quite similar, it’s FREE, it’s every Sunday, and it’s an hour of open floorspots and then a featured act. Tomorrow night the featured act is Nyk Stoddart/Mutant Lodge – it’ll be a hoot.

ALSO, IN OTHER NEWS…

So yeah, there’s tons of other stuff going on at the moment, my head nearly explodes thinking about it all. For instance tomorrow (1 April) as part of a thing called April Foolery, as many musicians as possible will all be turning up at The Pavilion Cafe in The Meadows at 1pm in the afternoon, and then playing music on the number 23 bus route to protest against the new Entertainment Licensing legislation that’s coming into force. Here’s more information, but if you want to stick up for small venues and live music, then be at The Pavilion Cafe in the The Meadows at 1pm SHARP with your instruments, or just yourselves.

See you all out there in Musicland!
